What is a cam belt and what does it do?

A cam belt, also known as a timing belt, is one of the most crucial items in the engine. It’s a rubber belt with teeth which synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft.
In simple terms, it regulates the way your engine works. The cam belt controls the opening and closing of the valves to the cylinder in time to ensure correct combustion in the engine. It’s primary role is to control the timing and sequence of the opening and closing.

When should I change my cam belt?

As there are no early signs of a ‘broken’ cam belt, these should be replaced when the manufacture says. Every vehicle has its own specific time frame on when the cam belt should be changed ranging from 40,000 – 100,000 miles and from 4 – 6 years.
The vehicles handbook will specify frequency of the change.

What happens if the cam belt goes?

Oh no, if this happens you are looking at a hefty bill because if the belt snaps the timing will be out causing the pistons to bend. Sound expensive? Gets worse smashed pistons causing bent valves, cylinder head or camshaft damage and piston and cylinder wall damage.
