Class 7 MOT Rules for Zero-Emission Goods Vehicles
Effective date: 1 June 2026
From 1 June 2026, zero-emission goods vehicles with a design gross weight (DGW) between 3,501kg and 4,250kg will be officially classed as Class 7 vehicles and will require a Class 7 MOT test. These vehicles will require their first Class 7 MOT test 3 years after they are registered.
As a DVSA-approved Class 7 testing station, RWS is fully equipped to accept and test these vehicles in accordance with the new legislation.
1. Official Definition of an Eligible Vehicle
A zero-emission vehicle is defined as one without an internal combustion engine, or with an internal combustion engine that emits zero grams of CO2 per kilometre.
Hybrid exclusions: This rule does not include hybrid vehicles of any kind. Any vehicle using a diesel, petrol, or LPG internal combustion engine — including range extenders that provide drive or charge the batteries — is strictly excluded from this category and cannot be tested under these specific weight allowances.
2. Updated Testing Standards & Requirements
While all current Class 7 test standards apply, testers and fleet operators must note two specific additions:
- Speed limiters: Speed limiters must be checked and tested as detailed in section 7.10 of the MOT inspection manual.
- Tread depth requirements: The minimum tyre tread depth requirement changes from 1mm to 1.6mm for these vehicles, bringing them fully into line with current Class 7 regulations.
3. Vehicle Weight and Safety Protocols
The physical size of these zero-emission goods vehicles matches current Class 7 vehicles, with the additional weight being a direct result of the vehicle's battery. To ensure safety during the MOT process, the following operational rules apply:
- If a vehicle is presented for testing fully or partially laden and its weight is uncertain, we will either request evidence of its weight from the presenter or measure the weight using our Automated Test Lane (ATL) brake tester.
- If the vehicle's presented weight means that it cannot safely be tested on our station equipment, the test must be declined. Presenters are permitted to unload the vehicle so that it can be re-presented and tested safely.
